About Turmeric Pepper

Welcome to my blog where you’ll find wholesome Asian recipes that prioritize real ingredients!

Hello!

I’m Nudra, the writer, recipe creator, recipe tester, and photographer behind Turmeric Pepper. I live in Malaysia, a country known for its culturally diverse cuisine with bold flavors, that blends elements of Malay, Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, and other Southeast Asian influences.

Inspired by my mother and grandmother, who involved me in the kitchen from a young age, and a family that always appreciates home-cooked food, I learned to love cooking for the joy it brings, the bold flavors, and the happy memories that come with it.

Cooking took on new meaning after I was diagnosed with auto-immune disease, Psoriasis, in 2018. It’s then followed by Psoriatic arthritis when I just entered my 30s. That changed how I view food. What was once a mere pleasure turned into a healing fuel.

Throughout my journey, I’ve learned how real, minimally processed food impacts my well-being, from my skin and joints to how I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. To me, eating well isn’t just about the benefits, it’s about enjoying the flavors too.

Asian recipes in this blog

Coming from a mixed background of Southeast Asian and Chinese heritage, my Asian recipes showcase the diverse flavors of Asia. Focused on whole foods seasoned with warming and aromatic spices such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, lemongrass, pandan, and chili peppers. Not only for their bold flavors but also for their goodness.

While I keep things simple and use mostly whole ingredients, I still preserve the authenticity of some traditional foods I grew up with.

Incorporating minimally processed basic Asian staples, such as low-sodium soy sauce and unrefined sugar, and minimal use of oil in my recipes. I believe balance and flavor are also important for the sustainability of the diet.

Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Cuisine in this blog

During the eight years I’ve known my husband and after spending multiple long stays in his homeland in Iran, I had the privilege of learning Persian cuisine firsthand from my mother-in-law in her kitchen.

Due to Iran’s rich Silk Road history and its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, Persian cuisine shares many similarities with Mediterranean cuisine, from the use of fresh herbs and spices to common ingredients and cooking techniques.

Initially, I intended to bring his childhood foods into our home. But before long, I found myself falling in love with the cuisine.

This assimilation of foods through our mixed marriage has brought me to create the recipes on this blog: The collection of Oriental Asian food that I grew up with, and Middle Eastern & Mediterranean food, which I have adapted from my husband’s side.

Whether you follow a gluten-free, no-sugar, or vegetarian diet, I hope you will find both Asian whole-foods ideas and Mediterranean home-cooked, inspired recipes on my blog. Thanks for stopping by!
