Why I Keep This Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Balls with Flaxseeds Recipe

As chocolatey and luscious as they look, this peanut butter oat ball recipe is rich in protein, fibre, and healthy fat. I added ground flaxseed to sneak in omega-3, antioxidants, and its digestive benefits.

When it comes to sweet treats or desserts, I prefer those that are more nutrient-dense rather than just sweet. I mean, desserts that feel indulgent but are still made with ingredients I feel good about eating.

Why You Will Love Them Too!

If you love chocolate and a well-balanced sweet treat, you will love these chocolate peanut butter oat balls with flaxseed. It’s:

  • Easy to make – Just in 10 minutes without any fancy equipment and tools.
  • Using simple everyday ingredients – You’ll probably have all 5 of them in your kitchen.
  • Meal prep friendly – Make once in bulk and enjoy for weeks to come!
  • Nourishingly sweet – It’s a well-balanced sweet treat that feels good.

As tempting as it is to overeat, especially for a sweet tooth like my husband, I remind him to limit himself to two to three pieces a day, since they can be quite calorie-dense.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients to make Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Balls
  • Ground Oats – If you have rolled oats instead, simply blend them in a blender until powdery.
  • Ground Flax Seeds – Whole flaxseed works too. If you want them ground (for easy digestion), you can blend the whole flaxseed too.
  • Honey – Feel free to swap it for maple syrup. Do not use a dry sweetener as the mixture needs liquid to bind and form into a dough.
  • Peanut Butter (Unsweetened) – Choose one with no added sweeteners. You can also check out my post on how to make one-ingredient peanut butter at home.
  • Chocoa Powder – Choose 100% cocoa without any added sugar.
  • Salt – This is optional, but it adds a slight saltiness to the ball.

How To Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Balls with Flaxseeds

Oat flour, ground flaxseed, peanut butter, honey and cocoa powder in a bowl
1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl
Kneading the dough with hand covered with glove
2. Mix the ingredients with a spatula, then continue kneading with your hand until it forms a dough. Feel free to use a stand mixer
3. Form the balls and arrange them in a dish. To keep them uniform in size, I use a scale. Each one weighs about 22 g.
4. Dust cocoa powder over the top using a fine mesh strainer, then gently wiggle the dish to coat evenly.

Variation

  • For Added Protein – Swap chocolate for protein powder (you might want to adjust the amount of sweetener)
  • Other Nuts – Swap peanut butter for other nuts butter like almond, pistachio, or hazelnut.

How Long Do They Last in the Fridge?

Although they’re usually gone long before that, these peanut butter oat balls can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 months. Keep them in an airtight container or zip-lock bag to maintain their freshness and flavour.
